Biotoxins are hazardous organic substances that can cause significant damage to your health. Examples of biotoxins include mold and fungi, bacteria, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), endotoxins and actinomycetes.

Most people are exposed to biotoxins through living in water damaged buildings. Other ways to come into contact with biotoxins include ingesting contaminated food or water, inhaling airborne biotoxins, and tick or spider bites.

In this article, you will learn what biotoxin illness is. You will understand its symptoms and major causes. I will introduce my 5-Phase Healing Protocol to help you repair your body from biotoxin illness and regain your health and well-being.

What Is Biotoxin Illness

Biotoxins are hazardous organic substances that can cause significant damage to the human body. These compounds are produced by living organisms. They are biological in nature and toxic to humans. They may be produced by plants, bacteria, or animals. 

Though not always, biotoxins usually serve as a defense mechanism for the creator. However, they can have a wide range of negative effects on the human body. Biotoxin illness happens when these biotoxins affect your body adversely, leading to chronic symptoms. Biotoxins target different systems in your body leading to various symptoms.

Neurotoxins, for example, specifically impact your nervous system, whereas cytotoxins target individual cells. The two most commonly seen biotoxins I see impacting my patients are tick-borne biotoxins, such as Borrelia Burgdorferi which causes Lyme disease and mold biotoxins called mycotoxins that cause mold illness.

  • Mold and yeast
  • Lyme disease
  • Viral infections
  • Bacterial endotoxins

Mold illness, yeast overgrowth, Lyme disease, and other biotoxin illnesses are on the rise in the United States. Our houses are built of wood and paper, vulnerable to water damage and moisture. These water-damaged indoor environments are a breeding ground for mold and mold illness. Yet many people are unaware that mold is hiding in their home or don’t take the problems seriously.

Biotoxin Illness and Chronic Inflammation

Lyme disease is also on the rise due to a variety of factors, including climate change, the elimination of predators, deforestation, and habitat change. The risk of Lyme disease is higher in wooded areas. However, nowadays we see Lyme disease in people from urban areas whose time in nature may include a stroll in the park, but never or rarely spend time in the forest. 

If your body is exposed to a biotoxin, your immune system will recognize it as a dangerous invader. Your body will try to break it down and remove the biotoxin, however, the body is usually not equipped to remove it, especially if your health is already compromised due to an unhealthy diet or lifestyle.

If your body is unable to remove these biotoxins efficiently, it will set up a series of inflammatory responses leading to a variety of symptoms and health issues. In some people, biotoxins can cause debilitating health conditions and disease, including Lyme disease, chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS), chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, hormonal imbalances, neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

Exposure to a biotoxin may lead to acute or chronic symptoms, depending on the length of exposure, the potency of the biotoxin, your personal health, and other factors. If you’ve been exposed to a biotoxin, it is important to address the issues early on during the acute phase, if possible, to reduce the risk of chronic consequences. The longer the problem is untreated, the more complex symptoms you may develop, making diagnosis and treatment more complicated (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

If you have a biotoxic illness, you may be experiencing a variety of chronic symptoms, including:

Major Causes of Biotoxin Illness

There are a variety of issues that may lead to biotoxin illness depending on the biotoxin itself and your personal health and lifestyle. Let’s look at the major causes of biotoxin illness.

Lowered Immune Function 

Your immune system is everything. It is your body’s defense system and helps to protect your health. If you encounter a biotoxin, your immune system is there to fight them off. However, if you have a poor immune system, your body will have a difficult time fighting them and you are more likely to get serious or ongoing symptoms.

Diet and lifestyle are critical when it comes to protecting your immune function. Eating a diet high in refined sugar, refined oil, processed food, conventional dairy and meat, artificial ingredients, junk food, and deep-fried foods can increase your risk of lower immune function and inflammation.

Chronic stress can also lower your immune function and increase inflammation in your body. When treating biotoxin illness, it is very important that you address unhealthy dietary and lifestyle choices and stress that can lower your immune system.

Water Damaged Buildings

Mold is a fungus that can grow and thrive almost anywhere, especially in warm and moist environments. They release mycotoxins which are biotoxins that can lead to a list of health issues. There are many forms of mold, some grown indoors and some grow outdoors.

Since mold likes moist environments, they most commonly grow in your bathroom, kitchen, and damp basements. However, they may appear anywhere in a damp, wet, and warm environment. Water damaged buildings are especially at risk.

It is important that you check your home. If you have water damage, find a damp environment, see or suspect mold in your home, it is important that you work with a mold remediation specialist. Before buying or renting a home, it is important that you check for potential mold, water damage, or problems that could lead to mold (6, 7, 8).

Tick or Mosquito Bites

You may get biotoxin illness from tick or mosquito bites. One of the most common biotoxin illnesses is Lyme disease, which is a serious infectious disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria found in and transmitted by infected black-legged or deer tick. Since Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks, it is more common in wooded areas, such as forests and trails, however, there is still a risk elsewhere, for example in city parks or even your backyard.

In the past, doctors believed that the tick had to stay in your body for at least 24 to 48 hours for you to get Lyme disease. However, according to new research, it seems that even if a tick is attached to the human body for just 15 minutes, that may be enough to transmit a variety of microbes into the victim.

Ticks may also carry other infections. There are over 200 different bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections that ticks may carry and you may experience along or outside of Lyme, including Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia. Biotoxin illnesses caused by mosquito bites include the West Nile Virus (WNV), La Crosse encephalitis (LCE), Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE), malaria, and dengue fever (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

Gut Dysbiosis

Your gut health is critical for your overall well-being. It is essential for a healthy immune system and helps to protect yours from infections and illnesses. Gut dysbiosis means there is an imbalance in your gut flora and there are too many bad bacteria in your gut.

Gut dysbiosis increases inflammation in your body. It lowers your body’s ability to fight off foreign invaders and increases symptoms related to biotoxin illness and other health issues.

Gut dysbiosis is also a breeding ground for Candida and other yeast infections, bad bacteria, including tick-borne bacterial co-infections, viruses, parasites, and other pathogens that either serve as biotoxins or otherwise compromise your health. When treating biotoxin illness, we must address underlying gut dysbiosis and heal your gut.

Viral Infections

Viral infections are biotoxins that can take a toll on your immune system, gut health, and overall body. The Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is the virus that causes mononucleosis. The problem is that once you’ve been exposed, EBV can stay dormant in your body and reactivate during stressful times.

EBV can increase inflammation in your body, compromise your immune system, and lead to autoimmune diseases and other health issues. EBV can not only compromise your health by lowering your immune function making you more vulnerable to biotoxins, but it can also aggravate Lyme disease, Lyme co-infections, and other biotoxins, making your symptoms worse and recovery more difficult.

Other viruses, including the herpes virus, human papillomavirus, and HIV can make your body more vulnerable to biotoxin illness and increase symptoms as well. When treating biotoxin illness, it is critical that we address underlying viral infections and viral co-infections (20).

Natural Support Strategies For Biotoxin Illness

The symptoms of biotoxin illness can be uncomfortable and can turn chronic. The good news is that there is a solution. My 5-Phase Healing Protocol offers a set of natural solutions to help you recover from biotoxin illness and regain your health. Here is what I recommend:

Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Plan

Following an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan helps to lower inflammation, reduce symptoms, support detoxification, aid cellular repair, and enhance your recovery from biotoxin illness. Remove all inflammatory foods and drinks, including refined sugar, processed foods, refined oils, artificial ingredients, junk foods, deep-fried foods, soda, and low-fat/diet products. 

Eat organic food to avoid exposure to pesticides, chemicals, and hormones. Load up on anti-inflammatory greens, vegetables, low glycemic index fruit, herbs, spices, and superfoods. Focus on healthy fats, including avocados, coconut oil, organic butter and ghee, and clean protein, including pasture-raised beef, free-range poultry and eggs, wild-caught fish, and wild boar.  Choose organic produce and products whenever possible and always follow the list of Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen.

Reduce Stress and Prioritize Sleep

Reducing stress and prioritizing good sleep helps to lower inflammation, improve your immune system, support cellular repair, and aid recovery from biotoxin illness. Avoid or reduce your encounters with situations and people that stress you out. Learn coping mechanisms to deal with stress better.

Create mindset shifts. Try to find the good in every situation and every person. Practice gratitude, prayer, meditation, breathwork, and grounding daily. Engage in other relaxing activities, including journaling, coloring, board games, crossword puzzles, dancing, exercise time with family and friends, and time in nature. 

Develop a regular sleeping schedule. Make sure to get at least 8 to 9 hours of good sleep. Avoid food, caffeine, alcohol, stress, and electronics close to bedtime. Make sure your bed and bedding are supportive and your bedroom is a calming sanctuary. Salt lamps, essential oils, relaxing colors, and beautiful crystals help to create a relaxing environment.

Engage in relaxing activities, drink herbal tea, take a healing bath, light a candle, or pray to unwind before going to bed. Start your day with a gratitude practice, a big glass of water, stretching or yoga, and a smile on your face to set yourself up for a stress-free day.

Sun Exposure and Good Hydration

Sun exposure and good hydration are both key to health. They help to reduce inflammation, boost your immunity, energize your cells, detoxify your body, and support your recovery from biotoxin illness. Spend at least 15 minutes a day in the sun.

Make sure not to go out mid-day to protect yourself from UV-rays, but go for a walk or practice grounding in the morning or afternoon sun. It is best if you spend several sessions outdoors each day. Along with sun exposure, make sure to take deep breaths to clear your lungs and energize your body with fresh air. 

Support your body by drinking plenty of purified clean water. Start your day with 32 ounces of water and drink throughout the day. Drinking a glass of water every hour or so will help you to keep well-hydrated. Add some lemon, lime, cucumber slices, mint, or berry for extra taste and nutrients. Eat hydrating vegetables and add some herbal tea, green juices, green smoothies, and bone broth for further hydration.

4 Phase Detox and Energy Support Protocol

To support your recovery from chronic biotoxin illness, I recommend a 4-month protocol.  This protocol is not at this time FDA approved to prevent, mitigate, treat or cure any disease or serious health condition and should not be confused as such. 

With that said, many people have seen significant improvement in their quality of life through following this protocol to support energy and detoxification.  Remember to be patient with the process and if you are severely ill; it is wise to work with a health care practitioner to guide you along the way.  Each phase is designed to be between 30 days and we will often repeat this cycle 2-3 times over the course of a year to get deep healing results.

Phase I – Support Energy & Drainage

The goal of Phase I is to improve bile ducts, healthy bowel movements, and mitochondria function. We are also working on getting rid of bacterial overgrowth and mold and fungal compounds in the body.

The liver and gallbladder are involved in the formation of bile, which is very important for your digestion. Bile ducts long tube-like structures that carry bile. To improve bile flow and your bile duct health: eat an anti-inflammatory diet, address food sensitivities, eliminate processed food, energy drinks, caffeine, and smoking; lower stress, reduce alcohol, address infections, and reduce environmental toxicity. Healthy bowel movements are important for detoxification, digestion, metabolism, energy, and immune health. To support healthy bowel movements, eat an anti-inflammatory, gut-friendly, and fiber-rich diet with fermented foods and optimize hydration. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of your cell that is important for cellular energy, cellular repair, and organ metabolism. When dealing with biotoxin illness, we obviously have to tackle bacterial infections. However, there may be fungal or mold infections that you are dealing. Mold toxicity and fungal infections can be very damaging and may lead to respiratory issues, headaches, fatigue, nausea, mental impairments, skin inflammation, and other symptoms. Phase II – Gut & Immune Support

The goal of the second phase is to get rid of parasites and continue to support your mitochondrial health. We are also becoming more aggressive at getting the microbiome back in balance and pulling mold/fungal compounds out of the body.

There are a variety of parasites that you may have inside your body, including roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, hook, nametode, and nematode. Parasites can increase inflammation and lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, brain fog, digestion issues, and more. When it comes to Lyme disease and parasites, it is thought that Borrelia and other co-infection causing pathogens can live inside these parasites.

Tick bites actually deliver nematodes inside your body that may carry these co-infections. This leads to more symptoms and complications and makes diagnosis and recovery more challenging. Furthermore, having too many bad gut bacteria and gut dysbiosis creates a feeding ground for parasites, further infections, inflammation, increased symptoms, and a higher risk of further disease. This is why Phase II tackles this with an aggressive approach (28).

To protect your gut flora and get rid of parasites, I recommend an anti-inflammatory, gut-healthy diet we discussed earlier. Certain herbs, including black walnut, sweet wormwood, garlic, oregano, tribulus, mimosa pudica seed, neem, wormseed, vidanga, passionflower, and clove are fantastic for parasite cleansing.

Para 1 and Para 2 are two supplements I recommend during this phase because they contain a necessary amount of anti-parasitic herbs. Heavy metals serve no purpose in your body. Heavy metal toxicity can be very dangerous to your health. Heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, and cadmium can increase inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular interference. They can weaken your body making recovery from biotoxin illness more difficult.

Heavy metals and other toxins can lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, blurred vision, inflammation, joint stiffness, pain, weight gain, digestion issues, nervous system problems, and increased risk of cancer. As the mitochondria get stronger and our pathogen load goes down, we want to ramp up our aggressiveness in getting these out of the body.

Eating a nutrient-dense diet, proper hydration, movement, oil pulling, and other detoxification strategies that support cleansing, digestion, and elimination is critical. This is why we are adding HM-ET Binder for heavy metals in this phase (52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57).

    In the case of mold exposure & toxicity, do you recommend any specific measures to help with debilitating joint pain/inflammation while one is going through the process of reducing indoor mold levels and removing mycotoxins from the body? Example: painful swollen elbows, red/swollen/stiff knees? Thank you!

  3. I am excited because you are the first health practitioner/medical professional I’ve encountered who talks about Biotoxic illness, Whenever I bring that up around any alternative health practitioners I’ve ever seen, they tend to ignore me and change the subject.
    I also learned from your article on inflammaging that chronic inflammation causes sarcopenia. That validates my experience. I remember telling a naturopath 15 years ago that I was experiencing accelerating aging and he didn’t comment.
    In addition, I am amazed by the vast amount of up-to-date information you email and archive on your website for no charge!
