These Hidden Sources of Sugar can Lead to Nutrient Deficiencies and Keep Your
Metabolism From Working Properly
We all like sweet foods and sweet flavors but are we being tricked into consuming more than we think we are? The average America consumes between 150-170 pounds of sugar a year according to the USDA. That is equivalent to nearly 14 tablespoons of sugar each day!
1. Smoothies and Shakes:
Most of us enjoy stopping into a Smoothie joint and getting a berry smoothie. Unfortunately, these are loaded with added sugars and actually contain very little real nutrition.
The average smoothie contains 40-80 grams of sugar in a 16-20oz drink. That is 4-8 tbps of sugar. If you get the larger sizes (32oz is most popular), you could get 120-150 grams (12-15 tbsps) of sugar right there!
2. Yogurt:
Today, most people assume that yogurt is healthy because it contains calcium, magnesium, protein and probiotics. Unfortunately, the amount of sugar within these acts as an anti-nutrient, increasing the utilization rate of these key nutrients. Some of these contain 20-30 grams of added sugars in the form of high fructose corn syrup.
Even Greek yogurt, which is touted as the healthiest form of yogurt contains 6-9 grams of sugar in a serving. That is about a full tbsp. of sugar. This is much better than sugar sweetened yogurts but still more than most people realize.
3. Protein and SuperFood Bars
In the health food industry, there are greens bars and other superfood and protein based bars that are full of date sugar or honey that are simple sugars that cause inflammation and blood sugar imbalances. Many of these also contain 20-30+ grams of sugar in a simple bar. That is 2-3 tbsps of sugar per bar.
4. Green Juices:
In the health realm, there are all kinds of green juices but most of them use a fruit juice as a base. Many of these have 20-30+ grams (2-3+ tbsps) of sugar per cup. I don’t care how many superfoods they put in these drinks, that level of sugar acts as an inflammatory stimulant and depletes the body of vital nutritional stores. It also promotes fat storage and will totally mess up your metabolism.
5. Dried Fruit:
Most people think that having a handful of raisins or craisins (dried cranberries) are a healthy snack. Many granola’s are full of dried fruit. These are loaded with added and concentrated sugars. One quarter cup of craisins contains 29 grams, nearly 3 tbsps, of sugar!
These are my favorite foods that I use with clients all the time to help them burn fat, build muscle and slow down the aging process. By using these regruarly and avoiding the 5 Hidden Sources, you will begin to reduce cravings, burn fat and improve your energy levels.
1. Coconut:
The medium chain fats in coconut help to rev up the metabolism by boosting thyroid function. The thyroid plays a very important role in metabolism, fat burning &&fat distribution. It also stabilizes blood sugar by enhancing cellular insulin sensitivity. Using coconut oil and coconut fats throughout the day will help kick sugar cravings, improve your energy and speed up fat burning.
2. Lemon & Lime:
Lemon & lime contain citric acid, potassium, vitamin C & vitamin P. These unique nutrients provide a powerful bioelectrical approach that charges up energy levels, alkalizes the body, enhances liver detoxification and reduces inflammation.
Using lemon & lime in your water and on your food throughout the day will also help balance your blood sugar, reduce cravings and improve your ability to burn fat.
3. Avocado:
This fruit is loaded with very good fats that enhance cell membrane activity, balance hormones and speed up metabolism. This is also one of nature’s richest sources of potassium which helps remove excess water and cellulite from the body.
Try to consume an avocado everyday in the form of guacamole, sliced up on salads or healthy meats. You can also put it in a low-sugar smoothie to add more good fats and powerful anti-oxidants.
4. Grass-Fed, Pasture-Raised Meat:
These meat sources are extremely rich in Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). CLA is a powerful metabolic fuel that enhances glucose sensitivity. CLA is known to improve the ability of fatty acids to enter the muscle and connective tissue cell membranes where they can be burned for fat.
They are also a rich source of amino acids, fat soluble nutrients and vitamin B12 which are critical for banishing cellulite, improving lean body tissue and increasing energy levels.
5. Pumpkin Seeds:
Pumpkin seeds are a rich source of magnesium, B vitamins and zinc that help to balance hormones and stoke our metabolism. Additionally, they are a great fat source full of small chain omega-3’s and fibers that helps to stabilize our blood sugar, cut the cravings and turn on our fat burning switch.
Sprouted pumpkin seeds are one of my favorite snack foods and they provide a mega-dose of key nutrients to help improve my energy levels and mental clarity. They taste so good, you will want to consume these everyday…and you can!
