Detoxify Your Body with Coffee Enemas:

Coffee enemas have been a key tool to cleanse the colon by many cultures all around the world throughout history.  Organic coffee bean was originally cultivated and used as a powerful liver cleanser by native American tribes.  There are many incredible health benefits of doing coffee enemas.

A common saying in natural health is that “death begins in the colon.” The ancient Egyptians, Hindus, Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Sumerians have all used colon cleansing techniques such as enemas to improve their health.  The ancient dead sea scrolls which are said to have been written during Jesus’ day detail the importance of regular enemas for good health as well.

In the U.S., up until the 20th century, enemas were known to be one of the most important parts of a healthy lifestyle.  The famed Dr. Kellogg reported to the Journal of American Medicine in 1917 that in over 40,000 cases of individuals with gastrointestinal disease he had seen remarkable results using a regimen of diet, exercises and enemas.

Colon, Colon Cleansing: Benefits and How To Do a 3-Day Cleanse

Digestive Health in the 21st Century:

Life in the 21st century is extremely challenging to our liver and colon.  We are inundated with chlorinated and fluoridated water, chemicals everywhere, and antibiotics in everything. Processed foods have very slow transit time and they very often will stick to the sides of the gut and become encased in a mucoid plaque creating toxic ridges in the colon.

These ridges are incredibly tough to remove and they limit the amount of feces moving through the bowel and provide an optimal environment for parasites to thrive.

When food sits in the colon, it rots and putrefies and releases toxins into the bloodstream that make their way to the liver.  The liver does its best to cleanse and purify the bloodstream, but when the gut continues to release toxins it creates an excessive burden on the body.  This eventually leads to a state of disease as the body is accumulating more toxins than it can remove.

The Benefit of Colon Therapies and Enemas:

Colon therapies and enemas help to remove the toxic mucoid plaque around the colon walls and the elimination of parasites in the gut.  They also facilitate better gut motility and frequency of healthy bowel movements.

Coffee enemas give an added benefit over typical water based colonic therapies by stimulating the liver to produce greater amounts of glutathione.  Glutathione is the bodies master antioxidant and helps protect the intracellular DNA and eliminate toxins from within the cells (1, 2, 3).

Glutathione and Your Digestive System:

Studies have found that green coffee bean increased glutathione production in the liver by 600% and by 700% in the small intestine.  The enema is the most potent way to gain these powerful effects because the enzymes of the digestive tract do not interact with the nutrients before they reach the liver (4, 5).

Coffee enemas are known to help individuals with gallstones, liver problems, digestive problems, low energy, autoimmune diseases and cancer.  They are used in almost every natural health retreat center around the world for their remarkable ability to cleanse and detoxify in a short period of time.

How To Do Coffee Enemas:

Individuals with chronic disease often do up to four coffee enemas a day, while those who want to live a healthy lifestyle are encouraged to at least do this weekly to reset the colon and filter out any toxic debris that has been stagnant over the course of the week.

Be sure to use ground organic coffee and boil with pure water (not tap water) for 15 minutes and let cool.  The proper ratio is 3 tablespoons of ground organic coffee to 4 cups of water.  Then pour it into an enema kit and bring to the bathroom.

Lie on your right side with your knees curled up and insert the nozzle about 4-6 inches inside the rectum and let the water begin to flow.

Additional Recommendations for Coffee Enemas:

Once all the water enters your colon, try to keep the fluid in for 12–15 minutes.  This will be challenging and you will have some major urges to let it out faster.

If coffee cannot be tolerated due to allergy, then one could use a diluted raw, apple cider vinegar or green juice enema.  You could also try an organic tea such as green tea or an assorted blend of organic herbs that the individual is able to tolerate.

  1. Did my first coffee enema last Monday and again on Wednesday. By Thursday I had a terrible yeast infection. Have you heard of this and what are your thoughts?

    1. It is part of the healing/detox process. You are likely “awakening” things inside your body that have been dormant. Things like this are DEFINITELY normal. They don’t happen with everyone but it IS normal. Often, those with a health issue have that same issue flare up worse for a bit too before it gets better. This is when the weak give up and think the coffee enemas are CAUSING the issue to worsen. Though it seems like this is true, it is NOT.

Also, it helps to load up on fresh carrot and/or carrot apple juice, both organic and both freshly pressed. Why? When you do a coffee enema you’re releasing toxins back into your blood stream. If you don’t replace the bad with the good (the juices) you could end up having other problems too as the toxins will just re-settle back into your body. Adding the juice is just a way to flush out those toxins more efficiently. Yes, coffee enemas DO get rid of some toxins but you might be taking 1 step forward while taking a half a step back. So you’re still gaining, just not as much as you could if you just added these juices.

By the way, the kind of apple you SHOULD use is Granny Smith FIRST then Gala if no GS is available.

    1. Hey Josey, if this is continually happening than yes, it could be a serious issue. Is this happening when you have normal stools or is it happening only when you do enemas?

  2. Hello Dr. Jockers, thank you for this article. I have a couple of questions, could you please answer them for me? I apologize this comment is so long 🙂
1.I have been doing coffee enemas for several months now about 5 times a week. I think I am ‘addicted’ to them now. Is there such a thing? I feel so good afterwards, that I am looking forward to doing them in the morning. How often should a healthy person do the enemas?
2.I am using the Gold roast, but it’s quite expensive. Will medium roast I usually drink, be good as well? Or, if I mix 50:50 gold and medium? What are your thoughts on this?
3.Even though I have been doing enemas for several months now, I still find it diffucult to keep the coffee in for more than 5-6 minutes (I usually have my regular bm, and then do the enema). So after researching this further, the last two times I added 1 Tablespoon of organic molasses, 1 teaspoon of sea salt and 1/2 teaspoon of magnesium powder to my enema. It really worked, and I stayed on my right side for 20-25 minutes without any problems. But what concerns me, is that I didn’t feel any urges to go at all. It felt like the whole 1 liter of coffee just got absorbed and never made it out of me (except of probably 1/2-1 cup or so). What was happening? Is it dangerous? I will try again and see what will happen, but I think this is not normal. Should I stop adding molasses, salt and magnesium? Thank you

    1. Hey Lana, for a healthy person I think once a week would be a good frequency! You do not have to use the gold roast, but if you use a regular coffee make sure the beans are lab-tested for mold such as this one: https://amzn.to/2NU1I87

I have not heard about the molasses and magnesium combo!

      1. The link here in your replyworks, but the ‘organic coffee’ link in the article takes me to hair chalk. Lol

  3. Dr. Jockers,
Thank you for this valuable information. I am gearing up to do my first coffee enema and have two questions.
    1. I have read about the importance of taking binder supplements (biotoxin binder and a heavy metal binder) to aid in removing the toxins from the body — what are your thoughts on this?
    2. Are coffee enemas safe for someone who has had their gallbladder removed?

    Many thanks —

  4. Dr. Jockers, I have an atrial fibrillation ( and implanted pace maker) and because of it I excluded all stimulants (caffeinated coffee, alcohol…) from my diet, use decaf. coffee only. I am generally healthy person/ slight over-weighted and have sluggish bowel movements (sometimes once in two, three… days). Should I use this procedure with caffeinated coffee, decaf or have to use something else at all? Or will it help if I will use just an enema with warm water?
    Thanks,
    Marina

    1. Hey Marina, I recommend that you consult with your physician and confirm that there are no contraindications for your use of coffee enemas. PureLife is the kit I recommend above and they do offer additional strategies including water and chamomile enemas as well as instruction on implementing these types of enemas into your lifestyle.

  5. I’m not a medical practitioner, but what I know about coffee enemas is this: you must use caffeinated coffee. That is what makes it work. If a person doing a coffee enema experiences the same effects as from drinking it, then you may be doing the enema incorrectly. The point is to not allow the coffee to go too far up your colon. You want to keep it pooled in the lower section (rectum). I am amazed at all the incorrect techniques to be found on the internet about how to perform coffee enemas.

Here is a short portion of a site that I learned from, years ago:

“The caffeine from the coffee is absorbed into this circulatory system [portal] and goes directly to the liver where it acts as a very strong detoxifier. It decongests the liver, and causes it to dump its toxins. It also causes the liver to produce more bile (which contains processed toxins from the liver) and stimulates the gall bladder to dump its contents which flows directly into the small intestine for elimination.

“This frees up the liver, enabling it to process toxins more efficiently. The coffee only goes to the liver and does not circulate throughout the body so it does not act like drinking caffeine would.”

I have done several CEs, once a week, and they were wonderful even though I can’t tolerate coffee taken by mouth. Also, I suspect that there is a point of diminishing returns, i.e., we were not meant to take CEs indefinitely or too often (as in every day). It can backfire on you and perhaps cause deficiencies. There is such a thing as too much detox; Sulfur is required for the synthesis of glutathione and perhaps this should be kept in mind.

Thank you, Dr. Jockers, for your article on coffee enemas. I’m interested in your Detox Summit.

    1. Hey Samia, Thanks for sharing! Yes, caffeine in the coffee is absorbed through veins and carried to the liver and gallbladder. Acting as an irritant, the caffeine stimulates the liver bile ducts to open which causes the release of toxins.

      1. I don’t understand why your excellent article would include the following statement:

“Once all the water enters you can move around and do some yoga poses if you like. This helps move the coffee around and facilitates better detoxification. ”

We don’t want the coffee to move around. It was not meant to go further up the colon, but to remain around the rectum. There is no benefit to having it way up the large intestine and indeed might start behaving like drinking coffee. Not good for some people.

There are different types of retention enemas. The coffee enema is unique.

        Tk. you.

    2. Hi Dr Jockers,

I forgot to mention for those newbies to coffee enemas I started off with 1 teaspoon of coffee to 2 cups of filtered water and retained it for at least 5 to10 minutes. I worked my way up to 2 to 3 tablespoons of coffee. I would then add 1 teaspoon each consecutive time, because you don’t know what your body can tolerate. After I reached my maximum of coffee then I increased the water volume and retention time to my maximum and highly effective dose that my body can tolerate very comfortably.

      Tom

  6. Dr. Jockers,
I just did my first coffee enema. I only used 2 tsp. of organic lightly roasted coffee in 1 quart of water b/cause I can’t drink coffee without getting a headache and the jitters. After the enema I felt aweful. I felt weak, nauseous, and foggy brained. This has lasted for hours although slowly getting better. I am a little nervous about trying it again. Could this be the symtoms of having so many toxins in my body? Do you have any suggestions if I do another enema?

  7. Hello, Dr. Jockers! I was doing coffee enemas quite often with no negative side effects. I felt so good after each therapy. However, the last time I did one (almost 3 months ago) I had a terrible adverse reaction. Shortly after… I got lightheaded, dizzy, head felt heavy, could barely walk, could barely hold up my head, and my speech was slurred… it was horrible. I’m assuming I was severely dehydrated? I slammed 4 cans of coconut water and slowly got better. I LOVE coffee enemas but I’m terrified to do another one with the fear of that happening again. Do you think that happened because I was probably already dehydrated before doing the enema? Or what could it have been? Thank you so much for your time!
    Blessings!
    Brittany

    1. Hey Marlon, Coffee enemas can help heal but it may also aggravate your conditions. I would recommend speaking with your practitioner to help identify your unique risks and benefits. This article offers information on treating the hemorrhoids first before beginning an enema regimen.

  8. hi im doing a long dry fasting (7 days)
I would like to do a coffee enema at the end on the 8th day morning before start slowly drinking again
could you give your opinion about that?

    1. I wouldn’t do that on a dry fast as there is a high probability you could have major issues with dehydration. I would break the fast with water and some salt for a day first.

  9. Hi Dr Jockers.

I am a huge fan of yours. I have been doing daily warm water enemas (2+ quarts and retain for 15 minutes) and weekly coffee enemas (2 quarts and retain for 15 to 30 minutes) since 1980 as a teenager for detoxing. I am as healthy as I can be. We are exposed to many toxins in our daily lives.

Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have. I love to share my experiences with others in detoxing with enemas.

Please note that I am not a medical professional.

    Tom

      1. Thank you for your reply. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions or make any comments about my post. I value your input. I can not tell you how great I feel healthwise.I

        Tom.

  10. I have never done a enima. And have heard they’re not necessary “ let nature do it’s course” however, if science offers good proof that it’s a healthy thing to do, I’m open. My biggest question is, if your lying on your side in a somewhat fetal position, and you can even reach your anus ( what about those who have limited range of motion or a little extra weight?), where /what are you laying on and where does the liquid go? Seems to me it might leak out if your on a bed and I’m not going to lie down in my shower. Can someone enlighten me?

  11. I’ve never done an enema so I have some basic questions–where works one lay on their side? On the bathroom floor? In the tub? Is this messy?
Also, after holding the coffee in for 15 minutes and fighting the urge to let it out–would I sit on the toilet to let it all out when finished? Trying to picture how this may work.
    Thanks!

  12. Dr. Jockers… Thank you for all the info you’re sharing! I did my first coffee enema as part of my cancer treatment regiment last night and I have felt awful since. Lethargic, stomach queasy, acid reflux, almost like the stomach flu. I am not doing radiation or chemotherapy but am on immunotherapy supplements. I was hoping to feel amazing (and plan to continue the enemas) but right now I’ve felt awful since. Does this slowly go away with each enema?

  13. Hi,
I have been doing coffee and water enemas for about 3 weeks now and am noticing some red fleshy stuff in my stool. They are small pieces, the biggest being about the size of my little finger nail. When I started the coffee enemas I felt pretty good after doing them but now I feel weak and intestines feel a little icky and kinda burning. Am I doing them too often? Anyone else having these red fleshy things and any idea what they are?
