Helpful Notes on Fat Burning Coffee:

You can make more depending upon how much you want, simply multiply the recipe.  Be sure to use a glass blender for this recipe as you wouldn’t want to pour hot coffee into a hard plastic blender as it will cause the plastic chemicals to leach into the blender.

Feel free to use the natural sweetener of your choice and to the flavor of your choice.  The dash of salt takes away the “bitter” after taste of stevia and makes this super flavorful and enjoyable.

You can also start small with the MCT oil and gradually work up.  If you take too much, you may notice indigestion or diarrhea.  Most people tolerate 1 tsp at a time just fine.

We like Keto Brain oil which is a C8 specific MCT that immediately produces ketones in the body for fat burning and energy.

Use an Organic, Mycotoxin Free, Shade Grown Coffee

Low-quality conventional coffee is not great. Pesticides and mycotoxin in coffee can be harmful to your health (181920). It is important that you drink high-quality, organic, mycotoxin-free, and shade-grown coffee for optimal benefits and safety.

I personally love and highly recommend Lifeboost Coffee. This coffee is organic, free from GMO, shade-grown, sun-dried, pesticide and chemical-free, full of antioxidants, stomach-friendly, less acidic than most coffee, and fairly traded with a 2-year shelf life. Most importantly, it is absolutely delicious.

Right now, they have a special holiday sale where you can this delicious, low-acid, immune boosting coffee for up to 50% off for a limited time.

Dr Jockers Comments:

This fat burning coffee recipe will help you get into ketosis, burn fat and reduce inflammation quickly!  For many people, this is their breakfast…as the good fats help to provide satiety and the combo helps to balance blood sugar, increase energy and improve mental output.

Mmmmm…coffee!  I love the smell and the flavor but went 15 years without it because I thought it couldn’t be a part of a healthy lifestyle.  Now, I know that unless someone has extreme adrenal fatigue or a major sensitivity to coffee that it can be used to improve fat burning and overall mental performance.

How does this recipe combo work to be so effective?  Coffee is rich in the polyphenolic antioxidants chlorogenic and caffeic acid that help to improve circulation and stabilize blood sugar. Cinnamon helps to improve insulin sensitivity and turmeric inhibits the major inflammatory NfKb pathway.

The grass-fed butter is rich in small chain fats such as butyrate and omega-3 fatty acids which de-inflame the body and it contains the fat soluble antioxidants vitamin A, D, E and K2 as well as phospholipids for healthy brain function.

Finally, the MCT oil helps to boost up the production of ketones very quickly in the body which helps to stabilize blood sugar and improve brain cell formation.  The combination is extraordinary and the taste is amazing!  Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments box below!

    1. Paul, some artificial sweeteners are bad for you I agree as the FDA made the companies like Sorbitol and Aspartame put warnings on their licensed products.
Stevia comes from a plant, you can even grow your own and make it yourself, my friend does this to eliminate the processing and costs.
Xylitol is recognized by the dental association and has been around for more than 50 years with no side effects, it also is natural and comes from the sap in hardwood trees.
Honey and maple syrup are also safe sweeteners you can use liberally in anything but beware of the calories, they are higher than regular sugars.

    1. I discovered a pinch of baking soda added to my coffee in the filter before brewing creates a perfectly smooth alkaline brew. No acidity.

    2. Jen, I also found some coffees like Starbucks and Tim Hortons to be very acidic…I thought it was just because they let the coffee sit or brew too long. Not the case since Starbucks now brews fresh every cup…it has to do with the quality of the bean and also if it is truly organic.
      Hope this helps.

I am a coffee connoisseur and have tried many brands over the years.
Cosco’s Kirkland Columbia is also a pure Columbian coffee with no bitterness,
      and cost effective.

      1. Cain’s Coffee is not that acidic. I can handle it fine. I cannot handle the other brands like Folgers, Starbucks etc.

    3. It is my understanding that your stomach is supposed to be acidic. Low acid causes acid reflux and other digestive problems. Blood is alkaline so if you’re not injecting it you should be fine:) I finally listened to my mother’s tips and stopped taking antacids years ago. I take organic apple cider vinegar for digestive problems.

        1. Is ths true? Cause it seems to be the opposite for my body. The more acidic my stomach – the more I have acid reflux and other digestive problems. I drink a low acid coffee. I cannot eat foods that are high acidic. Apple cider vinegar seemed to eat my stomach. At least that is what it felt like. I still have to take the purple pill at night to keep the acid reflux down. Help?

          1. I have found 1 tsp. baking soda in a glass of water helps acid reflux immediately.

          2. Different blood types seem to do better with more acidic foods. What I have been reading and looking at for the past 20 years is that blood type A are better with coffee because it brings their low acid levels up and blood type 0 (which I am ) do not do as well with things like coffee, wine, apple cider vinegar, because they already have high acid levels. They do better on a grain free, higher protein diet (red meat), with less acidic foods.

  1. Wouldn’t the addition of black pepper make the tumeric more bioavailable, or is adding the medium chain fatty acids, such as coconut oil, enough?

    1. Great question Nancy! Peperine, which is the active nutrient in black pepper can help with curcumin absorption, but it can also aggravate some individuals with leaky gut. There is debate in the field on this. If you tolerate it well, than adding a pinch of black pepper may help you. The MOST IMPORTANT thing with turmeric/curcumin absorption is having it with fat…such as the grass-fed butter and MCT.

        1. I’m using “Melt”, it has no dairy and made with coconut, flax seed and sunflower oils for I can not even find grass-fed butter in the supermarkets here in Canada. It’s a great dairy-free spread in place of butter.

          1. I have no problem finding grass-fed butter in Toronto, Canada, and regularly purchase through my local Loblaw or Superstore supermakets.

        2. Fronie, Kerrygold is only grass fed 75% of the time. It was just in the news. During the Winter months they are allegedly feeding grains to the cows. I am hoping that this is not true and will be proven in court but we shall see.

      1. is There another way for healthy fats besides MCT’s as I have a very sensitive digestive system and experience mad dashing to restroom

  2. Dr. Jockers,

I love this coffee recipe. I think I will make it apart of my morning routine. Yummy!

I have a question that’s a little off topic. I hope you can help me.
I’ve been trying to fight brain cancer with the Ketogenic diet. What should my macros and calorie intake be?

    1. Start a daily routine of: 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda, 1 tsp of Molasses or Maple Syrup in 1/2 glass of water.
My brother in law told me his friend is healed from Prostate cancer with this protocol. (I dissolved the baking soda & molasses in hot water, then added cool water to a half glass.)
I don’t know how often a day, at least twice I would try.

  3. Would love to try this – I use turmeric in my green tea. Trying to save my gallbladder, any suggestions?

    1. Luanne,

If you are experiencing gallbladder issues then it may be a better idea for you remove the butter in this recipe and use just the XCT oil for the time being. In the meantime follow some of these strategies to aid in your gallbladder healing (here).

  4. This is surprisingly yummy!!! Questions…I count my daily calories along with my macros, currently, could you provide the carb, protein, fat amounts in this recipe.

    1. Sorry Tammie I don’t keep track of those values! Following this recipe your only macro will be fat from the butter and XCT oil. You could simply measure the amount of butter and oil you use based on the nutrition label and estimate the fat content of this recipe!

  5. If you have this for breakfast I’m assuming this begins your eating window and would break the fast?

    1. Hey Krista great question! Technically you would be breaking your fast. Since this recipe’s only macronutrient is fat (no protein or carbs), your body will not have an insulin response. This means your body will still receive the metabolic benefits of fasting and you will burn more fat.

        1. No Jeff, It would be breaking the fast so you would lose some benefits of strict water fasting but without an insulin response you would still be receiving some fasting benefits. Some people struggle with the feeling of being hungry while fasting and will take the trade-off. If you want a combination of both, this for breakfast during the week and perform a 24 hour water fast from dinner Saturday night to dinner sunday night.

  6. Can you use ghee instead of butter? I have a dairy sensitivity but so far I have been ok with ghee. Or what do you recommend as a dairy free version?

    Thanks!

  7. Thanks, I’m definitely going to try this coffee in the morning and like idea of adding turmeric and cinnamon, but I might cut out the dairy products as I’ve been trying to do the Low carb high fat plan but my cholesterol has gone sky high and doctor is saying I have to go on statins! Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated.

    1. Hey Rita, certain cholesterol numbers often become elevated when switching to a high fat diet. It is important to look at the ratios between HDL, LDL, and Triglycerides. Sometimes an extreme elevation can be due to inflammation, infection, or blood sugar imbalance.

      1. Rita, it’s best not to do labs until after 6 months on keto. My labs are better than ever in all areas. I’ve completely changed my doctor’s view of keto.

        1. Hey Leslie, great to hear about your results! I do think you can do labs before 6 months…typically 90 days is a good period of time to begin to see changes.

          1. Leslie- Google “Dr Paul Mason: Blood tests on a Keto diet – what your cholesterol results mean”. It’s a very interesting and reassuring read. (Dec 2018 YouTube )

  8. Hi I’m wondering how much and how often should I drink this coffee per day? And whether I use it to replace a meal or meals?

    Thank you

        1. High amounts of carbs and fats on the diet are not recommended but if you use this as a breakfast replacement and hold off on consuming your first meal until later in the day then this can still be great!

  9. I like to add eggs in mine with a handful of spinach minus the stevia. The eggs make it smoother with added nutrition but the spinach may give it a slight bitter taste which you can get used to

  10. Sounds like an awesome recipe! Will give it a try tomorrow. I’m currently doing mct, collagen, cinammon, grass fed butter and maca powder ( +ashwadanga and mushrooms). If I’m trying to remain in a fasted state, will the maca and collagen take me out of this?

  11. What about high cloister levels? My doc wants to put me on meds..they said no oils, with only olive oil few times a week..to try stir fry with broth and squeeze lemon, lime or orange on salads if I feel need for dressings. I already eat eat no or low sodem/ salts due to high BP and am working on my type 2 dibetcic issues.. My A1C is now at 6 after losing 100 lbs and mostly eating veggies n some limited fruits with no fat cottage cheese or lil bits of lean meat or fish

    1. Hey Jacquelyn, low fat and low salt are not the solution for cholesterol and blood pressure in my experience. Balancing blood sugar and lowering inflammation are more important which can be done very well with a ketogenic diet (high-fat).

    1. I have not done so but it should be okay Karen! You may need to re-blend it to keep the fats emulsified. I just use an Organic turmeric powder that can be found in the spice section of most grocery stores!

  12. I’m starting Keto today. I didn’t blend anything I just put it in my contigo cup and shake it before every drink. Is it important to blend? Also I was looking into an egg fast. Am I ok to still drink this with my egg fast?

  13. I enrolled in the Keto Summit and purchased it because of the mass of information that I could not keep up with during that week. I have begun to watch the videos however I have a question that I have not found a complete answer to. My question is this…Is Keto safe, and is it effective if your gall bladder has been removed? I had mine taken out 25 years ago. The only thing my doctor told me at the time was to avoid carbonated drinks.

  14. I love the taste of this. I take several supplements and tumeric is one of those.

I am 50 years old, recovering from a recent hip scope with numerous procedures done. I picked up 4 pounds of weight in my waist area, and I am limited in my workouts until my labrum heals. I am going to continue this for awhile. Thank you.

  15. I’m having trouble getting the cinnamon to dissolve. I get left with gritty cinnamon at the end. Is there a way to fix it? I’m using a glass blender.

  16. I’m excited to try this recipe!! I have been doing the Keto diet for 9 months and have already lost 74.5 pounds!! 🙂

  17. HELLO,
Would this be ok to drink with Hypothyroid meds like Synthroid? I try to wait t least 30 minutes after meds before Coffee and usually wait 3 hours before I eat a breakfast snack ( my crazy work schedule)

  18. Hey,

Thank you for coffee recipe, I really really like the way you explained it, Me and my family this coffee so i’m going to try this one in upcoming weekend where we set together once in a week so this will be amazing can you please tell me if i use persian saffron in it ? Because i have purchased saffron in good saffron price that is why thinking to make a twist in it, this will be perfect or not give me some suggestion

    Thanks
    Debra

  19. Thanks for the recipe. I just want to know if it is ok for kids to have it for breakfast? Me and my husband have it everyday but don’t know if it is ok for kids. Our family mainly follow a banting diet.
    Thanks
    Christine

  20. I’ve been taking turmeric with aconcoction o ginger, garlic and lemon sweetened with honey for a while now. The impact is low, though my digestion has improved. I will try your recipe for sure. Anything for now will be tried till I solve the problem

  21. Many, like me, are allergic to stevia & “cousins” like some grasses & dandelions, etc.
Beware of stevia if allergic to plants.

  22. This is great for coffee drinkers. Unfortunately, I am not one. I do drink hot tea. I just use regular black tea.
    Will this work using tea?

  23. Thanks for the Keto recipe. I put a little more melted butter – organic and from grass fed cows – and MCT oil. But I also add re Ishi, cordyceps and lions mane AND Potassium Bicorbonate. I do not understand why everyone needs a sweet taste. Better to educate the taste buds. A hint of salt and the good pinch of potassium bicorbante leaves one with a beautiful velvety mouthfeel and texture that lingers for a while. So try a ‘shroom’ power coffee. It sets me up for the day and I warm up quicker after my wild swim ( in Scotland, where it goes down pretty jolly cold)!!!

  24. I gave up smoking awhile back, that completely changed the taste of coffee for me. I wanted to try this so I used Organic Cacao Powder instead. Tasted pretty good! I hope this is ok? Need this not just for fat burning but inflammation as well. Thanks guys :0)

  25. I will try to get my tumeric in foods other than my coffee!! I’m glad so many like it as it is so beneficial; but don’t mess with my 2 cups of bullet-proof Lifeboost coffee! 🙂 ! 😉

Thank you for the good articles you give us to help restore/maintain our health.

  26. Hey Dr Jockers, I was really keen on buying the coffee you recommended sadly, for US only. In in Australia. Please put in a good word for us over here that we want the good gear as well 😉 maybe something could be arranged.
Keep up the good work love reading your articles.

  27. So grateful for this post, and for Dr. Jocker’s humble and wise advice. There are a few parts to my story that I haven’t heard anyone mention. 1) I’ve been on the keto diet for about 4 years now as recommended by my long-term herbalist who has led me through many healing adventures. 2) She suggested I work with Dr. Bredesen and his Apollo Health Program “The End of Alzheimer’s” book) – she felt that from my symptoms, I probably was struggling with Toxic Mold, which she had recently recovered from herself. I’m now in Apollo’s ReCode program. 3) After over a year of “breaking my fast with ½ cup of coffee with coconut oil and Stevia” – my hair stopped growing and started to fall out. I told my herbalist that in the morning when my coffee cooled down, I’d put it back in the microwave. She said, “Oh, No! You can’t put the coconut oil in the microwave – it will change its molecular structure” – so I stopped. Now I get the coffee very hot before adding the coconut oil, and then drink it without any distractions so it doesn’t cool off. For about another year, my hair has stayed almost the same length, then began to grow a bit, then a bit more. Within six months, it exploded out of my head and grew like crazy. Then it filled out, and the slight grey went away. It is now down past my waist, full, curly, and gorgeous. It looks like it did when I was a teenager (I’m 64), and I’m buying clips, barrettes, and velvet scrunchies to try new ways to wear it up on top of my head. Has anyone else had this experience? Please tell people not to put the coconut oil in the microwave. And my Toxic Mold confusion is much better than it was – and continuing to improve.

    1. Oh my goodness!! That’s why it melts the styrofoam cup when re heat my coffee in the microwave. I’m glad I stopped doing that… Okay so get my coffee good and hot before adding the MCT oil! Thank you so much.

  28. Can another oil be used in coffee besides coconut? I use to use MCT oil/ coconut oil but it causes a burning/irritated feeling in my throat now.
    Thank you 🙂

  29. How can I drink Turmeric without badly discoloring my teeth every time? (my dentist thought I was a heavy smoker the last time she cleaned my teeth and I’m a non smoker!)
    Please advise.

    1. That’s a good question. Maybe waiting 30 minutes after drinking the coffee to brush teeth and rinse well…we have this problem with high-pigmented foods like spirulina, frozen blueberries and such. Same thing happens.

  30. 🍁Made it this morning using raw local honey instead as I’ve no stevia in my house at the moment. It was very smooth and easy to drink. I think it makes it easier on my adrenals, making coffee this way. We grind fresh beans from Rwanda and Kenya then use an Aeropress to make our coffee. I use St. Brigid’s Organic Grass-fed from A2 Jersey cows out of Ontario. Super expensive to buy and I live in the prairies. I have other options for grassfed butter, but so far, St. Brigid’s is the best. Sobeys and Superstores (Loblaws) carry grass-fed too, but this one I have to buy from specific healthfood stores. Thank you Dr. Jocker for posting this recipe and information. ❤
